The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners issued the following statement after the Federal Communications Commission late yesterday granted in part NARUC’s petition for a declaratory ruling that no FCC order or rule preempts State agencies from collecting broadband data:
“On behalf of our NARUC colleagues, we want to thank the FCC for reaching this conclusion. With this clarification that States are not preempted from collecting broadband data, agencies like ours can continue their work of determining where broadband is and, just as important, where it isn’t. States have the local knowledge and geographic expertise to collect and use broadband data in an efficient manner. Just like Congress and the White House, we fully support the expansion of affordable broadband services to all Americans, and this declaration lets us move forward.” -- NARUC President David Coen of Vermont, NARUC Telecommunications Committee Chairman Ray Baum of Oregon
