Garden Valley Telephone Cooperative Updates IPTV Middleware

Source: Innovative Systems Press Release

Garden Valley Telephone Cooperative in Northern Minnesota has chosen to replace their current IPTV middleware provider with the APMAX Middleware solution provided by Innovative Systems. One important reason for the decision is Innovative Systems’ ability to provide voice, video, and OSS services.

According to GVTC’s Chief Financial Officer, Mark Klinkhammer, a totally integrated solution from the enhanced service hardware (all the way to the billing system) has many advantages in cost savings and efficient business practices.

Located in Northern Minnesota, GVTC serves over 13,000 subscriber lines over an area that covers about 3,200 square miles. GVTC has been in business since 1906 and today provides its customers with voice, video and internet services.

City of Opelika, Alabama to Offer Residents Superfast Broadband

Source: Alcatel Lucent Press Release

The City of Opelika, Alabama will soon be providing residents with the ability to monitor and manage their own energy consumption to help save money and make their homes greener with the help of smart grid technology from Alcatel-Lucent. A new fiber optic network will also give residents the opportunity to access new high-quality broadband voice, data and video services, including lightning-fast Internet access, IPTV and video-on-demand services.

A new high-capacity ‘Fiber-to-the-home’ (FTTH) network will bring these broadband connections to households and businesses and allow Opelika Power Services to extend the reach of its ‘smart grid’, supporting new power sensors and smart meters across the city.

Residents will be offered advanced meter reading devices providing them with real-time information about the amount of energy being used in their households.  As a result, they will be able to identify when their usage is at a peak and when there are opportunities, day or night, to reduce consumption and save money.

Under the three-year project Alcatel-Lucent will deliver a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) optical backbone network in the City of Opelika based on Alcatel-Lucent’s Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology. The project also includes full services and integration of the Alcatel-Lucent ‘Triple Play Express’ solution for regional operators. To allow the City of Opelika to deliver voice, data and video to residents, Alcatel-Lucent’s Optical Network Terminal will be deployed at residences and the 7750 Ethernet Service Switch will provide service aggregation, bandwidth management and subscriber control.  Alcatel-Lucent has also been selected as the integrator of the City of Opelika’s IPTV service, which runs on the Microsoft Mediaroom solution.

Vermont Telephone Upgrades Network to Expand IPTV and VOD Services

Source: Alcatel-Lucent Press Release

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) and Vermont Telephone Company, Inc. (VTel), one of the largest family-owned telephone companies in America, announced plans to dramatically expand the availability of superfast broadband services such as Internet TV (IPTV) and video-on-demand to subscribers in its telephone service territory in Southern Vermont.

The deployment by Alcatel-Lucent of the 100 gigabit per second (100G) optical transport network, fiber-optic broadband access and IPTV delivery system will help VTel address the ever-increasing demand for faster, more reliable and cost-efficient broadband business and consumer services. As importantly, these services will now be available in areas where broadband connections have historically been limited due to Vermont’s rugged terrain and widely distributed, largely rural population.

With funding through the Broadband Stimulus funding administered by the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA), VTel is helping to bridge the technological gap in Vermont. By increasing the capabilities of its data transmission and broadband access network, VTel will be able to deliver video and high-speed Internet services to both residences and businesses at speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps), comparable to the fastest speeds available in the most advanced markets.
